Non-intervention Area in Pound Wood
The south-eastern corner of Pound Wood is designated as non-intervention, meaning that it will not be subject to coppice management. The fallen tree here is a very old coppiced Hornbeam that came down in the 1987 storm. In the centre is another very old coppice stool, probably 60-100 years since it was coppiced. Compare the middle-aged stool in Image and the very young coppiced stumps in Image

New Hedge Near Great Wood
This new hedge on private land was planted by staff and volunteers from Essex Wildlife Trust as part of a Image project, half a dozen people planted nearly 800 saplings in a day. The aim is to connect Image, Image, and Image with hedges that will act as wildlife corridors. The hope is that creatures such as dormice from Great Wood will spread and populate the other woods around here. You can see the view from the other direction at Image

Digby's Dell Pound Wood
The picture shows Digby’s Dell in Pound Wood Nature Reserve, Daws Heath, Essex. The reserve is owned by Essex Wildlife Trust http://www.essexwt.org.uk/. Digby’s Dell is the only permanently standing water in the wood so it is an important wildlife resource. Local lore has it that the pond is actually a bomb crater. The spot is provided with a seat to the memory of Marjorie Digby, she was the wife of Mr Michael Digby who helped ensure that the sale of Pound Wood from the Church Commissioners to the Essex Wildlife Trust went smoothly. for more info on the wood see http://www.poundwood.org.uk/Trail/Trail.htm.
