Sign for the Rose and Thistle
The sign is a reference to the uniting of the English rose and the Scottish thistle when James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1603.

The Rose and Thistle, Rockbourne
If you like your pubs old-fashioned, this one will suit you down to the ground. Although Rockbourne is very much a gentrified village, the pub interior doesn't appear to have changed much since the days when the customers were farm labourers - for instance, there aren't many pubs these days which still have a flag-stone floor. And notice the brewers' name - Strong's - over the door, commemorating the Romsey brewery which was absorbed by Whitbreads in 1969. Altogether, the place seems to double-up as something like a village museum.

The Rose and Thistle
Originating in the 17th C and rebuilt in the next century this building wasn't a pub for the first 150-200 years of its life. Constructed of rendered cob on a brick plinth it also has some 19th C painted brick, all surrounding a timber-frame core and covered by a thatched roof. It is Grade II listed with English Heritage Building ID: 144110. Notwithstanding all that architectural detail the important facts are as follows: friendly welcome; good service; delicious food and well kept beer. The Rose & Thistle
This charming thatched pub was built around 1580. It was originally 3 cottages, and later became a bakers shop. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890s.
