The Bustard Inn Sign
The Great Bustard is the largest European bird resembling a turkey. It has been extinct in Britain since 1840 but attempts are being made to re-introduce it on Salisbury Plain, very near to where this pub is to be found. 'Bustard' is from Latin avis tarda 'slow bird' which is an insult to the bird that can run and fly very fast.

Old Milestone near the Bustard Inn, Shrewton parish
Stone post (plate lost) by the UC road, in parish of SHREWTON (SALISBURY District), 60m South of The Bustard Inn, on the verge against hedge, on West side of road. Salisbury plate, erected by the Fisherton, Wilton, Heytesbury, Willoughby Hedge & Redhone turnpike trust in the 19th century.

Road junction near the Bustard Inn, Shrewton
Beyond the road junction in the foreground is a byway that leads into the military danger area. The gate at the access control point on the horizon is closed meaning that training is taking place.

This small building is a Veddette, a french word for a mounted guard or sentinel, today it refers to a guardhouse of which there are manyon Salisbury Plain.
