Old Sarum, cathedral remains
On the Iron Age, Roman, Saxon and Norman settlement site; the cathedral was completed in 1092, damaged by lightning soon after, and a new cathedral in modern Salisbury consecrated in 1219. http://www.timeref.com/hpl684.htm

Old Sarum, outer moat
Old Sarum was built on the site of an even older iron age hill fort. This view northwest shows the outer ditch, which is so deep and large it even has two public footpaths, one along the bottom and another along the top of the bank.

Outer bank, Old Sarum
The outer bank of the hillfort is bright with summer flowers - ragwort and rosebay. The lane left of centre leads down to Stratford Bridge across the Avon, close to the buildings.

Western entrance to Old Sarum's bailey
The causeway across the outer ditch on the western side of Old Sarum. The iron-age hillfort had an entrance here on the western side, but the earthworks have been greatly altered throughout the site's history. The eastern entrance has a less straightforward layout, with a horn-work or 'barbican' added in the late Iron Age.

Old Sarum's outer ditch
On the western side of Old Sarum, looking down into the outer ditch (the one surrounding the Norman bailey, based on the original Iron Age hillfort ditch). The walkers and dog are on a public footpath the follows the top of the counter-scarp bank around the site. In the foreground are the exposed roots of one of the many beech trees on this side of the hill.
