Bench Mark, London Road
The bench mark is to be found on the south east parapet of the railway bridge on London Road. For a view of the parapet Image and for more information on the cut mark http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm34669 A bench mark is an Ordnance Survey arrowhead sign found on walls, bridges, churches and specially erected triangulation pillars where the altitude above sea-level has been accurately measured by surveyors. The arrowhead points to a horizontal line above it which marks the exact altitude. With rivets and pivots there is no datum (horizontal line) cut, the pointed-to horizontal surface defining the datum height.

Allotments, Salisbury
Use of land as allotment gardens goes back to before the reign of Elizabeth I, but it was during the World Wars that allotments became really popular with city-dwellers and country people alike. Fresh fruit and vegetables were in short supply, so driven by the government Dig for Victory campaign, townfolk dug up public parks, playing fields and village greens to grow their own.

Salisbury - Laverstock South Junction
A 1963 view of a freight train heading away from Salisbury in the Southampton direction. The train may have been on its way to Salisbury's goods depot at Milford. The photo was taken from the then-defunct railway embankment which had formed the eastern side of a triangle of railway lines. The line between what are now named Laverstock North and Laverstock South Junctions was taken out of use in the early 1900’s only to be re-laid in 1983. It is now used mainly as a diversionary route to relieve congestion on the busy Southampton to Basingstoke route via Winchester.
