The Bishops Palace
This is the former Bishop's Palace, now the Cathedral School.http://www.salisburycathedral.co.uk/history.php?page=25
The cathedral does tours of the tower, which is where this shot is from.
In school holidays visiting choirs that are singing in the cathedral are allowed to use the school facilities for rehearsing.

The public are not usually allowed in the grounds as it's now a school, but visiting choirs have use of the rehearsal room which is in the light coloured block with the curved windows.

Gate to the Bishop's Palace
Thought to have been the first domestic building to have been completed on the Close, The Bishop's Palace was finished in time for the consecration of the first altars in the cathedral in 1225. During the 15th century the Palace saw many additions and alterations, King James I and his son Charles I frequently stayed here with Charles stating that he liked Salisbury above all other places in his kingdom. During the Civil War the Palace was acquired by the City who let it out as apartments, so much damage was done by the tenants that parts of it had to be demolished. During the 1660's two successive Bishops used their own money to restore the building, in 1947 the then Bishop decided that the Palace was too big to be a family home and moved into the South Canonry. The Palace was then handed over to the custody of the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral School who remain there to this day. Entrance to Cathedral School on Bishop's Walk
The right hand gatepost once had an OS cut mark benchmark low down on its north face (see http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm31896 ) but the mark appears to have been lost to repairs to the stonework.
