Primitive Methodist chapel, Canada
This brick building that faces onto Canada Common is the Primitive Methodist chapel, built 1901. Hampshire Treasures describes it thus: "Red brick with grey brick courses at top, middle and bottom of windows. Gabled slate roof with ridge tiles and finial over entrance. Sash windows at side with dust-coloured arches. At front entrance panelled wooden door with semi-circular fanlight and brick arch. Two deep fixed windows with semi-circular heads and brick arches. Five inscribed foundation stones." The common in the foreground is part of the National Trust-owned Bramshaw Commons. It is heavily grazed by ponies, cattle and some sheep. The gorse bushes in the foreground have been kept knee-high by the grazing pressure. The red tinge to the grass is a sorrel (probably rumex acetosa?).

Canada Common, New Forest
Canada Common is heavily grazed by commoners' stock, and as a result most of the ground cover is grass rather than heather. There are occasional gorse clumps, as well as isolated pine and silver birch trees. On the eastern edge there area also rhododendron bushes, such as the one in this photo, that have spread from the gardens of properties on the edge of the Common. The brick building in the background is the Primitive Methodist Chapel (built 1901).
