Pylons are bigger than you think (3)
The old righthand insulator assembly has been lowered to the ground and the new one is being fixed at the top. Porcelain insulators are used for the replacement because they are less vulnerable to vandalism. However, they are heavier than glass ones and therefore have to be installed in two sections. Each of the white rings weighs 12 Kg and the full complement of 23 weighs 282 Kg. Next Image

The insulators are rated at 42,000 lbs strain, so having a couple of men standing on them is no problem. Next Image

Pylons are bigger than you think (1)
This 400 KV pylon in Boyatt Wood, Eastleigh has been damaged by vandals. The glass insulators are vulnerable to catapults or air guns. In preparation for replacing them the electric power on the near side of the pylon has been turned off, safety earthing wires have been attached, and a winch has been used to remove the load from the insulators. Pylons are bigger than you think (4)
After replacing the righthand insulator string, the whole process is repeated for the lefthand one. Here the old insulator is being lowered to the ground. A hydraulically operated capstan winch on a Landrover below is used for the lifting tasks. The metal hoop within which the lower man is standing is a precaution against the wires being struck by lightning. In that event an arc will pass from the hoop through the air onto the metal of the pylon, rather than arcing over the surface of the insulators and damaging them.
