Arnewood, towers
The much smaller tower to the left (just to the right of the oak tree) was a trial, http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=144433&mode=adv ; to the right, Peterson's Tower, built 1885 of concrete, http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=144435&mode=adv The builder intended his remains to be interred at the top; this was not allowed. As seen from Agar's Lane; farm buildings from Overton Farm in front of the towers.

Sway: Sway Tower
A Victorian folly of some 218 feet in height, it was for a time a hotel but is now a private residence. This is the view from very close quarters; from a little farther away the view is marred by telephone wires.

Sway Tower
The tower was built by eccentric Yorkshireman Andrew Peterson in 1879. It is 218 feet tall and built of unreinforced concrete. There are nearly 400 steps in the spiral staircase seen on the left side in the photo. More information at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/follies/swaytxt.html

Sway Tower
Sway Tower is 66 metres (200 ft) tall and is a Grade II listed building. It is also known as "Peterson's Folly". Built by Andrew Thomas Turton Peterson on his private estate from 1879–1885. It is constructed entirely out of concrete, with only the windows having iron supports. It remains the tallest non-reinforced concrete structure in the world.

The two towers in Sway
The smaller tower to the north is alleged to be a sucker growth of the taller one! Others say it was built as a prototype for the full-grown tower.

Narrow footpath and stream near Oak Bank Farm
Judging from the new growth brambles, it looks as if a pair of secateurs would be needed to get along here in high summer!

Sway: postbox wording detail
With the sun shining obliquely across the face of Image, it is a good time to look at the lettering embossed above the slot, with its rather flaky paint. The word POST OFFICE accompanying the E II R cipher on a postbox means that we can date it to the pre-1994 part of the Elizabeth II reign: from 1994, the words ROYAL MAIL were used instead.
