The idea that there was a University in Purton was a long-standing joke before Purton 4th World University was set up with serious aims in 2009 by John Papworth, an ecologist and former Anglican priest. It is in fact a website exercise of which he is "Acting Chancellor", and attempts to "arouse new political thinking and more research in human-scale terms for the battle for ethnic freedom and the global crisis of war, environmental abuse, oil run-down, population numbers, citizen powerlessness and social disintegration".
