Thunder Brook, downstream, Wootton Bassett
Thunder Brook rises under a kilometre north-east of here and flows west through a small valley into an artificial lake created nearly 100 years ago. The brook continues on its way from the lake and joins the larger Brinkworth Brook at SU037834. Brinkworth Brook itself flows into the River Avon at ST974830.

Bridge over Thunder Brook, Wootton Bassett
There are three paths from the car park at Jubilee Lake that lead down to the lake itself. One crosses the brook feeding the lake via this bridge.

Fighting mallard drakes
This pair of mallards seemed to be fighting over a duck on the Jubilee Lake, Jubilee Park, Royal Wootton Bassett. There was much noise and splashing as they circled each other. This seemed odd behaviour on an October day so far from the mating season, especially as mallards, in my experience, are not known for their fidelity.

Jubilee Lake, Wootton Bassett
The lake is an artificial one having been created fairly early in the 20th century by damming Thunder Brook, a small watercourse that runs from east to west having risen under a kilometre away.

Jubilee Lake, Wootton Bassett
The lake was created around the time of the Great War when the Thunder Brook was dammed. It is now a popular leisure facility for anglers, dog-walkers and joggers.
