Built as the Wiltshire County Pauper Lunatic Asylum following the 1845 Lunacy Act which required county asylums to be built, the hospital closed in 1995 and has been converted into living accommodation. Devizes houses [52]
Modern housing in Downslands Road.
The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

Old Milestone by the A360, Potterne Road near Devizes
Metal plate attached to stone post by the A360, in parish of Roundway (Kennet District), Devizes Road; 50m North of driveway to Woods; 200m North of Broadleas Gardens, in bank behind footpath, where East side footpath starts, on East side of road. Burt iron casting, erected by the Devizes (consolidated) turnpike trust in the 19th century.
