This trompe l'oeil doorway is very well done. It faces onto the main Bath Road (A361).

Another view of the old toll-house. It bears the scars of old vehicular impacts.

St. Peter's Church, Devizes
I searched in vain on the sign boards for some indication of what sort of Christianity was practised here, but noted the adjacent school (the pointy building to the right) was St. Peter's Church of England School, and the church man in charge called himself 'Fr.', which was puzzling. On reading the church web site, it turns out this is an Anglo-Catholic church. They seem to have fallen out with the local church bosses (probably over women), and now look to the Bishop of Ebbsfleet (in Kent!) for higher guidance.
A Victorian grade II listed church.

Devizes buildings [47]
Built in 1866, this modest church of St Peter is listed, grade II, with details at https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1263777 There are some interesting details about the church at http://media.freeola.com/other/11200/stpeterschurch.pdf
The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

The west wall of St Peter's church
The church was built in the 1860s with stonework that has started to decay slightly, revealing the layered strata of the blocks.

This shows the actual door into the property. It bears the name 'Shanes Castle' on the letterbox, which is why I have not included the possessive apostrophe in any of the relevant image titles.
