Old Milestone by the A365, Caen Hill, Poulshot
Metal plate attached to stone post by the A365, in parish of POULSHOT (KENNET District), bottom of Caen Hill, West end of dual carriageway, 85m West of lane to Poulshot, on wide verge, close to met station mast, on South side of road. Burt iron casting, erected by the Devizes (consolidated) turnpike trust in the 19th century. Not visible on Streetview in April 2021. Inscription reads:- : BATH / (?) : : LONDON / 9(1) : : DEVIZES / (2) : Maker:- : BURT / DEVIZES : Grade II listed. Caen Hill Locks [46]
Seen from above, this is lock number 27. There are 29 locks raising the Kennet and Avon Canal 272 feet in a distance of two miles up Caen Hill near Devizes. Designed by engineer John Rennie, the sixteen locks (numbers 29 to 44) which form the steepest part are a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
