Devizes buildings [102]
The former White Lion public house in Northgate Street was later operated by the adjacent Wadsworth Brewery to train potential licensees. Built circa 1840 of painted brick on a rendered plinth under a hipped slate roof. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1262608 The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

Former Assize Court, Devizes
A noble neo-Greek building in Bath stone with an Ionic portico. The architect was Thomas Henry Wyatt. It opened in 1835 and closed in 1982. Grade II* listed. A forlorn sight. It can be difficult to find new uses for court buildings, as Devizes has no doubt discovered.
