House by top lock, Devizes
A grade II listed building described as 'Circa 1830 adjacent to canal and probably built in connection with it.' There is certainly some doubt about the canal connection. It is built square with the road, not the canal, and if the date is right, built about twenty years after the canal became a through route here. It is not a typical lock keeper's cottage, but on the other hand, one would be expected at the top lock of a major flight on the canal. The right corner looks as if it had been something like a toll office.

Kennet Lock No 50, Kennet and Avon Canal, Devizes
The derelict lock as seen from Devizes Town Bridge in 1977. The name of the lock is difficult to account for, as the nearest point on the River Kennet lies many miles to the east.

Former Assize Court, Devizes
A noble neo-Greek building in Bath stone with an Ionic portico. The architect was Thomas Henry Wyatt. It opened in 1835 and closed in 1982. Grade II* listed. A forlorn sight. It can be difficult to find new uses for court buildings, as Devizes has no doubt discovered.

Devizes buildings [7]
Built in 1835 this magnificent building, formerly housing the Law Courts and the County Police Office, has been derelict for a number of years. It would be tragic if another use could not be found and it was demolished. Listed grade II*, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1251744 My 2018 image Image reports that the building has been saved, The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

Devizes buildings [24]
After over 30 years of neglect by various owners, this magnificent building formerly housing the Law Courts and the County Police Office has been saved. As reported by Wiltshire Council 'Thanks to support from the Wiltshire Historic Buildings Trust and a generous local benefactor, ownership has been secured by the recently formed Devizes Assize Court Trust. A major fund-raising campaign will be launched with the aim of restoring the building and refurbishing it to become the new home for Wiltshire Museum. The refurbishment will include purpose-built galleries, a café, a lecture theatre and the provision of community space.' The building, with its Grecian style facade was built in 1835 and is listed, grade II*, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1251744

A turn of fate
The Devizes Assizes once held the fate of the defendents in the balance of law. Now the site's future is being held up for judgement after many years of service. Built in 1835, the rooms held regular court sessions but stopped in the 1980s, leaving the Grade II listed structure abandoned and put on the 'at risk' register. Now moves are starting to gather momentum to turn it into the new Wiltshire Museum. Some £300,000 has been awarded from the Lottery Fund, along with other supporters, to create the new community centre.
