17 Market Place, Devizes
Early C18th - see the hipped roof and equal-sized windows. The glazing bars could be original. Fine railings and surrounding gate piers too - the ensemble might be the reason for the highest listed status. Grade I listed. The problem of an even number of bays is apparent - how to place the door symmetrically. Visible on the right is part of a late-C18th stable block.

Devizes houses [13]
Number 16 Market Place is a delightful 18th century building with an elaborate curved and coved 'shell' hood over the door is set back from the road. Listed, grade II*, with details at https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1250833 The elaborate gate piers, glimpsed here are also listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1263272 The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.

Viewed across Northgate Street in October 2014. The Wiltshire Gazette & Herald’s office closed down in early 2013, ending a 195 year presence in Devizes. The weekly newspaper is based in Trowbridge.
