It would appear that scaffolding had been erected to reach the roof, where tiles had been removed and temporarily replaced by blue plastic sheeting.

A non-cycle route?
Pleasant tree-lined suburbia. Officially a cycle route, but my relatives who live here claim never to have seen a single person using it!

Back garden of The Corner House, 44, Sandy Lane South in 1913
Taken by my paternal grandfather, George W Baker, this shows the side wall of 83, Hillside Gardens, at the end of the garden. Previously the family had lived at Image but they didn’t live at Image long, as they moved in about 1919 to Image, seen here 5 years later. This may have been because of Beddington Aerodrome, which would have posed a risk to the family during the First World War. The aerodrome opened in December 1915 and was one of ring of small airfields dotted around London to protect the capital against Zeppelin raids http://www.croydononline.org/history/places/airports.asp My father used to reminisce as to how frightened his brother and he were of aircraft flying over the house, that they used to hide under the stairs.

Compared with Image, the huge beech tree has almost hidden the house from the road and has partly dislodged the garden wall, along the pavement.
