The Greyhound Hotel, Carshalton (2)
This is the east range of the hotel - weather-boarded, and older than the main building. Photo taken from the edge of the pond opposite. For a more general view of the hotel, see: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3732622 I might add that one reason for presenting this shot in monochrome was the very poor light on this November afternoon - colour in the initial image was a bit wayward.

The Greyhound Hotel, Carshalton (1)
The hotel - said to have been a coaching inn - occupies a prominent site overlooking Carshalton ponds, at a bend in the main road from Sutton to Croydon. Nearer the camera is the rather imposing west range of the hotel, with its shaped - 'Dutch' - gables. Beyond it, closer to the road, is the weather-boarded east range, which - with features such as the tall chimney - appears older. The listing text suggests that the main hotel dates from the early 19th century, the weather-boarded portion from the previous century. http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-206783-the-greyhound-inn-greater-london-authori Photo taken on a rather gloomy afternoon in early November.

The 'Greyhound', Carshalton, Surrey
The Greyhound, regarded by many as Carshalton's 'prestige' pub, is not seen to best advantage here, as maintenance is being carried out.

Carshalton Ponds
Carshalton Ponds lie near one of the former sources of the River Wandle. There are two ponds, the upper West Pond and the lower East Pond with a difference of about half a metre between the two. The ponds were historically one sheet of water but seem to have been divided in medieval times. Since records began the West Pond was public property while the East Pond was private, belonging first to Stone Court and then The Grove. A medieval owner of Stone Court was the first builder of the causeway which divides the two waters and it seems to have always been used as a footway. This is the West Pond from near the war memorial in Honeywood Walk looking across to the busy Pound Street on the other side. The Greyhound Hotel is to the left while to the right is the Honeywood Museum - see http://www.friendsofhoneywood.co.uk/
