As Kinder Road heads out of Hayfield there are houses at intervals on either side; here is the entrance to Hillside with, on the immediate right, a footpath leads down to the River Sett.

Mass Trespass plaque
On Kinder Road near the sign for the Snake Pass path. It commemorates "the arrest of leading members of The Kinder Mass Trespass on 24th April 1932 following their return to Hayfield after the protest. They served prison sentences of up to six months for their part in the campaign for access to our countryside."

Snake Path
Few footpaths have much recorded history associated with them, but this route from Hayfield to the Snake Inn was, as the sign tells, secured by the Peak District and Northern Counties Footpaths Society in 1897 'for ever'. This must have been a significant innovation at the time, coming many years before the famous Kinder mass trespass of 1932.

History on a footpath sign securing an ancient route
The Peak District and Northern Counties Footpaths Preservation Society formed in 1894 to protect ancient routes. The Snake Path was one of their first routes secured by agreement with the Duke of Devonshire, as the sign says, Dedicated for ever May 29 1897. On the back of the sign is written, Altitude 705.6 feet. Wonderful signposts and we looked out for them over the next 84 miles till our return to Hayfield
