Hamnett Street
Hamnett Street seems to have acquired an extra terminal "t" over the years. At the turn of the 20th century "3 Hamnet Street", on the right, was Fowden's Undertakers. http://oldhyde.blogspot.co.uk/2011/04/j-t-fowden-undertakers-on-hamnet-street.html Although still listed as such in many online directories, it hasn't been an undertakers for some years and is now the home of a hydroponics business. On the left and set back from the street are properties 1 and 3a Hamnett Street. My understanding (although I've lost the source of my information) is that this building was originally part of the funeral business but 3a is now an office of charted architects Davenport and Flinn http://www.davenportandflinn.co.uk/ a business started by Peter Davenport in 1960, established as a partnership with John Flinn in 1975 who now runs the business solely after the former partner retired in 1989.

Hamnett Street

Another Closed Bank
The large white building on the corner of Market Street and Hamnett Street was at one time a UCP (United Cattle Products) cafe. https://hydonian.blogspot.com/2010/07/ucp-cafe.html After the cafe closed It became the Abbey National Building Society Image The antecedents of the Abbey National were the National Permanent Mutual Benefit Building Society established in 1849 and the Abbey Road & St. John's Wood Permanent Benefit Building Society, founded in 1874, based in a Baptist church on Abbey Road in Kilburn. In 1932 the society moved into new headquarters, Abbey House, at 219–229 Baker Street, London, which it occupied until 2002. The site was thought to include 221B Baker Street, the fictional home of Sherlock Holmes and for many years Abbey employed a secretary charged with answering mail sent to Holmes at that address. The two societies merged in 1944 to form the Abbey National Building Society. In 1989 it became the first of the UK building societies to demutualise, and become a public limited company. In 2003 it rebranded itself as simply the Abbey Image In November 2004 it become part of the Santander Group. Santander had also acquired Bradford & Bingley's retail branches Image and savings business in September 2008 In January 2010, Abbey and the branch network of Bradford & Bingley were rebranded as Santander and for the next four years both branches continued to operate at the opposite ends of the Market Place Image In 2014 the former Bradford & Bingley branch was closed down Image and its business merged with former Abbey branch. Now in 2021 Santander is the fifth bank in the town to close down. Already gone are Barclays Image - Image, HSBC Image - Image, RBS Image - Image and Yorkshire Bank Image - Image leaving only Halifax Image, Lloyds Image and NatWest Image

The White Lion & William Hill's
Whilst the revamp of Hyde market ground has been ongoing, the area in front of the White Lion and William Hill's has been fenced and boarded off and used as a "site office". Now as the work nears completion, the site is being opened up again.
