'A very open prospect to the rear'
That description could be applied to any of the properties whose rears are shown here. The dark trees on the right are the grounds of Eddisbury Hall. The house roofs visible at the left edge are down on Buxton Road.

Looking slightly more northerly than my other view over the fields below Blakelow Road, the white scar of the Hurdsfield Industrial Estate can be seen.

Macclesfield Countryside
This view is from a track leading off Stoneyfold Lane and facing East. The scenery is fabulous and such a contrast to the view in the opposite direction (see my other photo for this square) which overlooks Macclesfield and the surrounding area.

Macclesfield Countryside
This is the view facing West, overlooking Macclesfield. (Stockport is to the right of the photo, and Jodrell Bank to the left) On a clear day you can see the cooling towers of the power station at Ellesmere Port.

Buxton Old Road meets Buxton New Road
Old to the right, new to the left. The old road was the original 1759 turnpike road, replaced in 1821 by a longer but less steep route. Today it is the A537.

Buxton Road joins Old Buxton Road, Macclesfield
Early turnpikes were often too steep, not to go up, but to come down. In 1759 1 in 7 was considered reasonable for the old road to the right. By 1821 gradients nearer 1 in 14 were considered the normal maximum for the new road to the left, allowing lighter coaches to achieve much better overall speeds.
