This pub was built in the 17th century. Its very interesting gantry sign is one of only two remaining in Hertfordshire.

Metal plate attached to stone post by the B1368, in parish of BARLEY (NORTH HERTFORDSHIRE District), London Road, opposite Mortimers, in garden hedge, on North side of road. Wadesmill plate, erected by the Wadesmill turnpike trust in the 19th century.

Barley: War Memorial and Lock-up
The Grade II listing text for the Cage or Lock-up begins "Former village lock-up. C17, restored c 1970. Timber frame. Pyramidal
slate roof. Approximately cubic. Close-studded plank and muntin frame
with 8 studs to each side". The War Memorial of 1919 is also Grade II listed.
