Skull and crossbones
These gruesome skulls adorn the gates of the church of St Nicholas, Deptford. Local legend has it that this is the origin of the pirates' motif. More skulls (carved in wood) can be found within the church and there is an old 'charnel house' in the churchyard where skeletons were stored - it is sadly now used as a tool shed.

St. Nicholas' Church, Deptford Green, SE8 - east gateway
This new gateway was designed by the architects Austin Winkley & Associates. The symbols of three golden balls on the brick piers refer to one of St. Nicholas' good works. He heard of a merchant who had three daughters and who, because of hard times, could not provide dowries so the daughters would have been forced into prostitution, but they were saved by three sacks of gold thrown anonymously (by St. Nicholas) into the merchant's house. {Source: Leaflet "St Nicholas' Church, Deptford Green".}

St. Nicholas' Church, Deptford Green, SE8 - the Charnel House
The Charnel House, also known as the Watch House or Mortuary, was built soon after the rebuilding of the main part of the church at the end of the 17th C. At that time, bodies would be laid there for safekeeping. The building was restored in 1958. {Source: Leaflet "St Nicholas' Church, Deptford Green".}
