These gruesome skulls adorn the gates of the church of St Nicholas, Deptford. Local legend has it that this is the origin of the pirates' motif. More skulls (carved in wood) can be found within the church and there is an old 'charnel house' in the churchyard where skeletons were stored - it is sadly now used as a tool shed.
