View across Vanbrugh Pits, Blackheath
The site of old gravel workings, Vanbrugh Pits has long been reclaimed by nature and is one of the more attractive parts of the generally rather flat Blackheath. There is much gorse present and it is particularly attractive in springtime when the blossom also comes out. The pits are named after Sir John Vanbrugh, architect of Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard, who had a house near here.
