View from Penge Road bridge
Until 1836 this was the line of the Croydon Canal before it sold out to the London & Croydon Railway Company. The first trains here were run by the London & Croydon Railway from London Bridge to West Croydon in 1839. Trains to Brighton first ran here in 1841. This view looks northwards towards London Bridge. The line joining on the right brings trains from Crystal Palace over the main lines via the bridge in the distance. London Overground trains also pass under this bridge now on their way to and from West Croydon.

London Overground train passes Bromley Junction, from the Goat House bridge
The Overground train is bound for West Croydon. Behind it is the site of the former steam-era Norwood Junction engine shed, now a track maintenance depot. Behind the Overground train, curving down to join the main line is the line from Crystal Palace, in the down (southwards) direction: the corresponding up line runs just below the camera and can just be made out diverging left.

Railway tracks seen from Penge Road bridge

Norwood Locomotive Depot
View northward, towards London: ex-LB&SCR Depot. Serving Norwood Marshalling Yard, it was situated on the east side of the main line north of Norwood Junction station, with the Down loop of the line from Clapham Junction via Crystal Palace curving over at the far end and round to the left. The Depot (BR code 75C) had an allocation in 11/54 of 33 steam locomotives (17 0-6-0, 4 2-6-4T, 12 0-6-2T) and 14 Diesels (1 main-line, 13 shunters), most of which remained here in early 1960. The 'civilians' wandering around are on an RCTS Visit.

Norwood Junction
The lines to and from Crystal Palace branch off the main line to left and right. Crystal Palace is actually to the left, and trains from there cross the bridge in the distance. Unit 377 123 is heading for Crystal Palace.
