For years I just saw the street lights strapped to this and assumed that it was only a lamp-post, but closer examination shows it to be a vent for waste gases from a sewer below. See Image for a detail of the crown, and Image for a detail of the base.

Norwood Junction
The lines to and from Crystal Palace branch off the main line to left and right. Crystal Palace is actually to the left, and trains from there cross the bridge in the distance. Unit 377 123 is heading for Crystal Palace.

London Overground train approaches Bromley Junction, from the Goat House bridge
The Overground train is bound for West Croydon. Behind it is the site of the former steam-era Norwood Junction engine shed, now a track maintenance depot. Curving down to join the main line is the line from Crystal Palace, in the down (southwards) direction: the corresponding up line runs just below the camera and can just be made out diverging left.
