"Down these mean streets, a man must go..." Auckland Road is more Diary of a Nobody than The Big Sleep, but was nonetheless from 1900 to 1905 home to the teenage Raymond Chandler: his house, on the left, has since October 2014 been honoured with an English Heritage blue plaque.

St John the Evangelist, Auckland Road, Upper Norwood
The church of St John the Evangelist in Auckland Road, Upper Norwood is a Grade 1 listed building and is one of the most important Victorian buildings in South London. Under the guidance of the first vicar, William La Trobe Bateman, it was designed by John Loughborough Pearson, possibly the greatest ecclesiastical architect of the nineteenth century gothic revival. See http://www.stjohn-uppernorwood.org.uk/ The church boasts an excellent choir, and is used regularly for concert performances.
