The church of St John the Evangelist in Auckland Road, Upper Norwood is a Grade 1 listed building and is one of the most important Victorian buildings in South London. Under the guidance of the first vicar, William La Trobe Bateman, it was designed by John Loughborough Pearson, possibly the greatest ecclesiastical architect of the nineteenth century gothic revival. See http://www.stjohn-uppernorwood.org.uk/ The church boasts an excellent choir, and is used regularly for concert performances.
