Crystal Palace station: constructing a train-shed
Works here are beginning on reinstating shelter over the platforms here, which receive much heavier use than previously now that the London Overground services terminate in this part of the station.

Crystal Palace station: the lines towards London Bridge during the reinstatement of the roof
The reinstatement of a roof is the latest work to affect this part of the station, following the arrival of London Overground services in 2010. The buffer stop for the main Overground line (platform 5) creeps into the right of the photo.

Exterior of Crystal Palace (low level) station
The “high level” station was demolished in 1954, but the low level station survives as a testament to Victorian railway architecture. Opened in 1854, the present buildings date from 1875 and were extensively refurbished in 2002 including the porte cochere (covered porch) shown here. Listed grade 2 (list entry 1064353).

Parked Overground trains at Crystal Palace station
On 18th July 2016 a large sinkhole opened up in the railway trackbed at Forest Hill, resulting the suspension of traffic on that line. The following day all Overground services from Crystal Palace were still suspended and these Overground trains sat immobile on unused platforms.

Staircase to disused platform, Crystal Palace station
Not too many years ago, this side of the station, on the line to Sydenham, was only used at peak times. However, the introduction of off peak services between London Victoria and London Bridge via this route was followed by the extension of part of the East London Line service here, meaning more trains stop on this side than the Croydon side. New platforms have been built in the centre, rendering the side platforms redundant (right); therefore, this impressive staircase is no longer in use.
