Gipsy Hill
Looking up Gipsy Hill towards Gipsy Hill station with the Colby Arms on the junction with Colby Road. The origin of the name 'Gipsy Hill' is obscure but may be derived from a population of gipsies that lived in what was then part of the Great North Wood.

Gipsy Hill station, exterior view
There has been a station here for well over 150 years. Opened in 1856 on the West End of London & Crystal Palace railway, it was taken over with the rest of this line by the London Brighton & South Coast Railway in 1864. In modern times, Southern Railway and Southeastern operate a variety of trains through here, reaching London termini at both London Bridge and Victoria.
