Steps seen from Hawke Road, Norwood
In spectacular contrast to the level paths and gentle ramps through the estate there are one or two of these daunting flights of steps. Very likely they are less for residents and more for internal estate access by management and maintenance staff, police, emergency services and utility providers. The block at the top is Lambeth Prospect, 10 on the estate plan

Central Hill estate ? ramps between levels
Living on a hillside, however exhilarating, inevitably means a climb to the shops or the bus. Architects have to think of everything.

Central Hill estate ? southeast on Wychwood Way
Wychwood Drive entrances 17-36 are on the left. In the distance ahead is the London Prospect block. Oakwood Drive houses 21-30 are passed on the way, centre, and the scene is overlooked by the Lambeth Prospect block, upper right.

Central Hill estate ? open space between Wychwood Way and Northwood Way
Overlooked by the London Prospect block of flats, far left, a path descends from Wychwood Way, the structure in the centre. Upslope is a terrace of Oakwood Drive houses. Downslope on the right is a terrace of Northwood Way houses, whose outlook is to Hawke Road.

99 Central Hill
Quite a dignified house, now flats, and surprisingly neither statutorily nor locally listed. Most buildings pre-1840 are listed so that may date it to shortly after then although I might have placed it at least a decade earlier. It has a Tuscan portico, a verandah and end windows with pediments and brackets. It ends too abruptly at the top, it needs a parapet or balustrade.

Hawke Road
Its north side filled with the Central Hill Estate, a Lambeth Council estate of 1967-74. Lambeth's present incarnation wants to knock it all down so that it can build private houses, the sale of which will fund new social housing. There has been spirited local opposition.
