Woolwich town centre demolition
An eight-storey building being demolished to make way for the new Tesco development in the town centre. Part of the new build can be seen to the right of the photo. I have not found a view of this building prior to demolition.

Tesco Extra, Woolwich
Until recently Tesco was the only major supermarket without a town centre presence in Woolwich. That changed when this new store, claimed to be the largest supermarket in South-East London, opened in November 2012. For the demolition of the previous buildings on the site, see Image A future phase of the development will see a tall residential development above it.

Maritime House in Tesco's glass, Woolwich
Maritime House is possibly the most conspicuous building in central Woolwich. Here it is reflected in the glazed facade of the Tesco Extra on Love Lane.

Woolwich Central development, Woolwich
Placing Image] in more context. The development which extends to the left towards Woolwich New Road, had the dubious distinction of being voted winner of the Carbuncle Cup in 2014 as Britain's worst new building: "oppressive, defensive, arrogant and inept", according to the judges. On the right is the public library.

Woolwich, SE18
Looking out onto the junction formed by Woolwich New Road (on which the van is parked) and Grand Depot Road are the Presbytery, the Roman Catholic Church of St Peter the Apostle and a former Roman Catholic School (now a Church Centre). The church is a Grade II-listed building that was designed by Augustus W.N.Pugin in 1843. The main shopping centre is on the left, whilst Woolwich Barracks is reached by Woolwich New Road using the One Way system in place.

The Woolwich Centre, nearly finished
One of the largest elements of the major redevelopment of Woolwich Town Centre was this complex, including council offices for around 2000 staff, a public information centre and public library. At this point in May 2011, the structure was complete and being fitted out. Commercial parts of the development were to include a large supermarket, hotel and apartments. A similar development (also with a leisure centre) had opened in 2008 in Eltham Image Council website link: http://www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/info/200119/customer_services/1193/our_service_centres/2
