Mast Quay phase 1
These two apartment blocks on the river front, typical of 2000's riverside developments in London, opened this year (2006). Phase 2 will be in the foreground of the photo if it gets planning permission. Update 2023 : Mast Quay 2 got planning permission in 2012, for a building of over 200 apartments and it was built. However in 2023 the local council ordered that it should be demolished, because there were 26 major deviations from the original planning permission. By this time many of the apartments were occupied. See this article in The Guardian of 27 Sept 2023 - https://www.theguardian.com/global/2023/sep/27/london-apartment-block-that-deviates-from-plans-must-be-torn-down-says-council. The developer is entitled to appeal the decision, what will happen?

Erosion of the Thames riverbank at Woolwich
A short section (about 30 metres long) of the Thames cycle path was swept away by erosion in the winter of 2006/7. The path was diverted away from the edge from this point to the ferry approach and the bank has since been rebuilt.

Riverside redevelopment site in Woolwich
I must have been on the old ferry jetty a few days before another image was taken: Image Landmarks in the mist are the Odeon Cinema (now a church) and the square tower of St Mary Magdalene Church on the skyline. The area, formerly a flour mill and other industry, was being cleared to allow construction of a new ferry terminal pier and new ferry workshop. (added information from J. Webb) The image has been scanned from a 35mm Ilford FP3 monochrome negative, date circa April 1964.

Riverside redevelopment site in Woolwich
Seen from the pedestrian walkway on the upstream side of the old ferry jetty. Landmarks are the Odeon Cinema (now a church) and the square tower of St Mary Magdalene Church on the skyline. There is another image from a few days earlier revealing that part of the site under demolition was the British Road Services Woolwich Depot. Image John Webb recalls that the former flour mill on the site is just visible on the left of the photo - the hoist used to remove sacks of grain from barges is the protruding white structure just visible. The image has been scanned from a 35mm Ilford FP3 monochrome negative, date circa April 1964.

Focal point is the Woolwich ferry vessel John Burns. Canary wharf is beyond it and the flood barrier is catching the sun.
