20-54 Surrey Square
A magnificent Georgian terrace by Michael Searles, 1793-94, for the Rolls Estate. It was more impressive until Victorian philistines pulled down almost half of it for a school, leaving the central pediment decidedly off-centre. Each house is of three bays in three storeys and has a simple doorcase (Image], Image]). There is no skimping here - there are three openings on each storey following Palladio's dictum of void upon void, solid upon solid. The aforementioned centre is treated more grandly (Image]). Grade II listed. The whole terrace stands behind a contemporary raised pavement. Grade II listed.
