Wendover, Thurlow Street, SE17
Wendover is part of the Aylesbury Estate. The estate is a good case study in how not to build council housing.

Down the street is the 14-storey cliff that is the southernmost Wendover block of the Aylesbury Estate. One of the low-rise Wolverton blocks juts in from the right, closer at hand. Wendover House, Thurlow Street
The Aylesbury Estate's largest 'barrier' block. Pevsner reports that, according to the Guinness Book of Records, it is "the longest block in Europe built to an industrialised system". Catch it while you can - it is due to be pulled down, a process which is likely to increase its resemblance to the town in Buckinghamshire.

Neighbourhood shop, corner of Alvey Street and Surrey Grove, Walworth
On the corner of Alvey Street and Surrey Grove, Grove Food & Wine appears a thriving business. Before World War II Alvey Street showed on maps as an artery to and from central London. Now it and Surrey Grove are stubs on the edge of the Aylesbury Estate. Two of the blocks in the Wolverton group are on the left.

The view is west at the kink on Kinglake Road, roughly the reverse of Image The names of blocks are not suffixed with House as on the post-war Kinglake Estate behind the camera. To the left is low-rise Winslow. Rearing up behind it is 14-storey Wendover. One of the Wolverton blocks juts in from the right. The blue sheeting is for the demolition or refurbishment of Latimer on the other side of Thurlow Street. Note all the plastic bags caught in the tree.

The painted white box on the right is a corner shop, Grove Food & Wine on Alvey Street, retained from the original streets of terraced houses Image Through the gap is the 14-storey Wendover block by Thurlow Street on the Aylesbury Estate.

Name panel in bespoke tiles, Tenterden House, Kinglake Estate, Walworth
This style of name panel is also seen on similar blocks in Camberwell Image The generally more refined design of Tenterden House suggests that it was built later than the rest on Kinglake, or was by the same architect.
