Heygate Estate
This is Swanbourne block, facing Walworth Road. Swanbourne is one of the first blocks to be cleared of residents as part of Southwark Council's plan to demolish the entire estate, which was originally built between 1970 and 1974. The unfortunate effect of this is that the remaining tenants are obliged to live temporarily amongst empty boarded up flats. There are many reports of the empty flats being used as crack houses which must make living here almost unbearably unpleasant.

Apartments under construction, Elephant Park, Walworth, London
This is the site of Southwark Council's demolished Heygate estate. An approximately similar view from Walworth Road is
Image, taken during demolition. See
Image and http://www.elephantpark.co.uk . The branding associates the development with romantic, historic-sounding Elephant and Castle rather than unappealing Walworth despite the latter being an apparently vibrant community that has not yet been gutted. One has to question the sense of a brandname that evokes the hot, dusty savannah – or is it a subliminal appeal to the many people of African and African-American origin in the area?
