Gasholder number 1 at The Oval
The famous Grade II gasholder is familiar from test matches at the Oval. This is Gasholder number 1 dating from 1892 which is Grade II Listed. The full story of the gasholders at The Oval can be seen at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Oval_Gasholders The shape of the Oval Cricket Ground was determined by the pre-existing street pattern – not the other way around.
The gasholder is seen here from the derelict garden of the Cricketers pub. The pub next to Kennington Oval has been closed and derelict since 2002. In March 2019, planning permission was granted for demolition and construction of a new residential development with a replacement ground floor public house. See https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6998011 for the front of the pub.

Watching cricket at The Oval
The sun was out in late August and shirts (but not the photographer's) were off at The Oval. This was probably as good as it got for these Surrey supporters at the Vauxhall End: the County Championship match against Derbyshire was the only one Surrey won in 2013 as they finished bottom of Division 1, six points behind the visitors, who were also relegated.

The Oval: start delayed
Overnight rain delayed the start of the Surrey-Nottinghamshire match until 12.15. Thereafter Surrey, the leaders, emphasised their position as champions-elect. The majority of what turned out to be quite a large crowd were in the Pavilion, but some hardy enthusiasts waited patiently here at the Vauxhall End.
Surrey 375, Notts 101 and 149. Surrey won by an innings and 125 runs.

The Oval: gasholder
Seen from the seats outside the players' pavilion. There was not much of a crowd on the second day to watch a very feeble Surrey side well on the way to an innings defeat against Notts, and relegation from Division 1 of the County Championship, but we visiting supporters enjoyed centuries from Mark Wagh and Samit Patel and a huge first-innings lead.

The Oval: gasholder and new flats
A view from the members' pavilion at The Oval, showing new and not inexpensive flats going up. Some are to be built inside the surviving gasholder frame.
