Outbuildings, Glyn-gath
The combination of old stonework and corrugated iron is a common, and not unfelicitous one, in Wales. The old structures were built to last, as can be seen by the size of some of the stones, but the newer material had the advantage of being quick and easy to utilize, and is beginning to acquire its own kind of antiquity.

Welsh archetype: Glyn-gath
It would be hard to find a more 'typical' Welsh cottage or smallholding than this one near Cilrhedyn in the Gwaun valley (and it is very like the one in which the photographer's own early years were spent). Typically too, it is now a charming second home. The name, Glyn-gath, means cat valley.

Cottage window, Glyn-gath
Large enough to afford a view of the valley, small enough to economise on glass and to avoid too much wind chill from the prevailing sou'westerlies.

Limewash and slate, Glyn-gath
Resisting the temptation to prettify these old dwellings, with hanging baskets, lantern lights and so on, is always the most successful approach and maintains their stark, utilitarian beauty.

Old gate to reservoir
Below Trellwyn-fach is this small gate in a rusty metal fence; it appears to have once given access to the disused reservoir (visible here at Trepwll), but there is no way through now. The fence looks like an 'official' not an agricultural type and may date from the period when the reservoir was operational.

Farm track and footpath
A track between the mountain road below Mynydd melyn and the Gwaun valley at Pont Cilrhedyn is used for farm access and is also a public ROW. The land here is mainly improved pasture.
