Bwlchmawr, Dinas Cross
Cluster of houses around the "big gap" of the name Bwlch Mawr, where the A487 old turnpike road passes below the Castell mound, possibly once fortified, that lies immediately to the east. There used to be post office and shop here, now just a phone box.

Worm castings, Bwlch Mawr
These tiny coils of digested soil are deposited on the surface of lawns and grassy areas by earthworms. Although annoying to fussy gardeners, they form a highly nutritive compost. Charles Darwin's last book, The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms with Observations on their Habits (1881), was the result of 40 years' research on these humble creatures which, he explained, have been responsible for sifting and turning the entire earth's surface. He calculated that in the course of one year, in an acre of land, they bring to the surface in the form of castings, 18 tons of earth, enriching and aerating the land in the process.

Houses at Bwlch Mawr
The houses here are set close to the road (A487) on both sides in this western segment of the linear village of Dinas. Formerly they included a shop and post-office with a pub opposite but now they are all private dwellings, a mixture of terraced cottages and larger houses.

Bwlch Mawr tennis courts and Castell
Dinas is unusual in having its own public tennis court, useable on application to a nearby house. Caravan holiday park to the left while the hillock behind is marked on older maps as an antiquity 'Castell', possibly a fortified camp, but this may be only supposition and it is impossible to access now.
