Smallholding
A smallholding sits on the tree line between the Black Mountain and the beginning of Brynaman village. Its closeness to Nant Melyn (Yellow Brook) provokes the idea that the building could have been a mill. (melin in Welsh) No wheels or structures have been found.

Mangled remains of a footbridge
Just beyond a kissing gate onto the common land, this curious collection of mangled metal was observed. Not too much effort is needed to deduce that this is the ruins of a footbridge - indeed a quick walk down the hill to the left of the picture and an obvious void next to a ford would be the ideal place for a footbridge. It looks like there's recent ongoing work here and possibly a new footbridge in the near future?

Nant Melyn (Yellow Brook)
A foot bridge crossing the ‘Nant Melyn’ (Yellow Brook) within the Brecon Beacons National Park with ruined sheep folds in the foreground. The Brynaman ‘commoners’ used to hold their hardy mountain sheep within these stone walls ready for washing in the river.

Signposts onto common land
The signpost points in two directions - one is a footpath over a ford (and recently dismantled foot bridge) to nearby locations in Brynamman and the other out onto the Black Mountain. The latter is actually shown as a road that traverses the mountain on old maps, being presented as an equal to the tarmac road that runs in parallel not too far away. The old road's path can be followed throughout its course both on maps and on the ground, arriving at Image, though these days a nearby sign warns that no motor vehicles are allowed to use it!

New footbridge over the Nant Melyn
Here's the footbridge replacing the mangled remains of its predecessor which Hywel had photographed. It was recently installed by the National Park warden service.

Farmers gate and kissing gate
Farmers gate and kissing gate the last restriction before entering the Black Mountain (Y Mynydd Du) and the Brecon Beacons National Park. This path following the Nant Melyn valley is one of many pleasant walks around the village.

Nant Gwinau
The diminutive Nant Gwinau marks the boundary between open moorland and farmland here west of Brynaman. The moorland forms the southern slopes of the Black Mountain and lies within the Brecon Beacons National Park http://www.breconbeacons.org and Fforest Fawr Geopark http://www.fforestfawrgeopark.org.uk
