Birthplace of George Thomas, Port Talbot
This photo shows the house at 36 Tydraw Street where George Thomas, later Viscount Tonypandy, was born on Friday 29th January 1909 and became a teacher, Labour politician, Welsh Office Secretary of State, then Speaker of the House of Commons from 1976 to 1983. He then moved to the House of Lords as Viscount Tonypandy until his passing in Cardiff on Monday 22nd September 1997 aged 88. Besides being a teacher and politician, he was also a Methodist local preacher and was elected as Vice-President of the Methodist Conference 1960-61.
