PARLIAMENTARY DETAILS
Stephen Kinnock MP for Aberavon Constituency

Aberavon Parliamentary Constituency: An Overview

Aberavon is located in the county of Neath Port Talbot in South Wales. It covers the town of Port Talbot and its surrounding areas.

Historical Context

The Aberavon constituency was created in 1918 as a result of the Representation of the People Act, which redistributed parliamentary seats and extended voting rights. It was formed by merging parts of the previous constituencies of East Glamorganshire and West Glamorganshire.

Political Representation

Aberavon has traditionally been a Labour Party stronghold. Since its creation, the constituency has consistently elected Labour MPs in general elections.

Area and Demographics

Aberavon, like many industrial areas, has an aging population. In the latter half of the 20th century, the South Wales region, including Aberavon, faced significant challenges due to the decline of heavy industry. Steelworks and coal mines closed, leading to economic hardship and unemployment in the area.
