Inside Bishops' House, Meersbrook Park
Here we see the dining room of the timber-framed Tudor house built during the reign of Queen Mary I - though once this room would have simply been the main living area of the Blythe family - a place where they slept, ate and socialised. Over half a millennium Bishops' House evolved and there were numerous changes in its use and appearance.

The Bishops' House on a grey April afternoon
Situated to the south of Meersbrook Park, The Bishops' House has absolutely nothing to do with bishops. The name is probably a Victorian affectation. Recent dentrochronological studies have revealed that the house is not as old as was once thought. The older, left-hand portion of the property was almost certainly built in the springtime of 1554 during the reign of Queen Mary I. The right hand extension went up twenty six years later, in 1580, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

Bishops' House, Sheffield
Bishops' House is the best example of a timber framed house in Sheffield. It was once a farm surrounded by fields. It was built at the end of the 15th.Century, around the time two members of the Blythe family became Bishops. In 1886 ownership passed to the Sheffield City Council and various recreation department employees lived in the house until 1974. It is a Grade II* listed building and has been open as a museum since 1976.

Bishops House, Meersbrook, Sheffield
The oldest timber framed building in Sheffield. This is one for the apostrophe enthusiasts. You'll find it as Bishops, Bishop's or Bishops' depending on where you look. I've abstained, but read the long story and make your own decision, see; http://www.bishopshouse.org.uk/index.php/history
