Situated to the south of Meersbrook Park, The Bishops' House has absolutely nothing to do with bishops. The name is probably a Victorian affectation. Recent dentrochronological studies have revealed that the house is not as old as was once thought. The older, left-hand portion of the property was almost certainly built in the springtime of 1554 during the reign of Queen Mary I. The right hand extension went up twenty six years later, in 1580, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
