Nether Edge as seen from Meersbrook Avenue
The image is taken from halfway up Meersbrook Avenue, looking North West across Chesterfield Road, towards Nether Edge. The hill on the horizon is the area around Fulwood and Broomhill. The large white tower block on the hill is the old Forte Posthouse Hotel in Fulwood.

Double-sided sign in a Sheffield passageway (1)
Actually a piece of public art by David Appleyard. From this side it reads 'GENNEL' and from the other side it reads 'GINNEL' Image
The artist's website explains why:
"Whether you call it a snicket, ginnel, or tenfoot, every region has their own word for it, especially in Yorkshire and across the North of England. As someone from West Yorkshire, I’ve always considered "ginnel" to be the common (and correct) term. However, here in Sheffield and South Yorkshire, the local twist is "gennel."
The debate between "ginnel" and "gennel" is something I’ve heard countless times, and I’m always amused by the fact that just one letter sets the two words apart. A recent development at Little London Road, Sheffield features a perfect example of this passageway.
To highlight the linguistic divide I created a lenticular sign, manufactured in the style of an archetypal street sign. Depending on which side of the passageway you're approaching, the sign will read either GINNEL or GENNEL, giving a nod to both versions of the word."

R J Stokes and Co Ltd on Little London Road
Better known as Stokes Paints, this company has been in existence for over a century, and has traded on this site since 1921. The tiled mural above the door depicts a stricken rider on his steed - a mystery to me, although the company website http://www.rjstokes.co.uk/history1.asp traces the origins of the company.
