Note the 'overhanging' second floor over the corner entrance door of the Fireplace Shop ... this was possible by using metal columns in the structure. The columns are visible in this picture of a demolished shop on the opposite side of Holme Lane. Image

Tramways Medical Centre, Holme Lane, Hillsborough, Sheffield - 1
Unusually there was no traffic - trams or vehicles - on this busy road when the picture was taken. Tramways Medical Centre, housing two GP Practices, is built within the old Holme Lane Tram Depot site, which was closed (as a Depot) in March 1954. The facade was retained when the site was developed and makes a superb entrance and exit feature. 40 years on from the depot closure, trams returned to the area when the 'new' Sheffield Supertram system was opened. Tramways Medical Centre, Holme Lane, Hillsborough, Sheffield - 3
This picture gives the same view as a picture included in the book 'Sheffield in the age of the tram 1950 - 60' ... the picture, one of only a few showing any part of the Holme Lane Tram Depot, is dated 20 March 1954. The two properties opposite the entrance were shops back in 1954 but have had the shop windows replaced and are now just houses ... what stories they could tell of all the comings and goings of the Sheffield Trams in their hey day. Vacant Lot, Holme Lane, Hillsborough, Sheffield
The shop on the corner of Holme Lane and Haden Street has been demolished - presumably because it was unsafe - but has been left in this unattractive state for over 12 months. The two metal columns on the corner would have been supports for the 'overhanging' upper floor above the entrance doorway. Image

Unlike the linked picture there is plenty of traffic about in this shot ... including the Malin Bridge Supertram on its way to Sheffield City Centre and beyond. The block of stone built shops, just prior to the red brick entrance to Tramways Medical Centre, has a stone built into the frontage stating 'Hillsbro' Market 1896' ... however, I can find no details to describe the make-up of the market.
