Old Milestone by old Doncaster Road, Denaby Main
Metal plate attached to stone post by the UC road (was B6023), in parish of Conisbrough (Doncaster District), Doncaster Road near railway crossing (road one way except for bicycles), on pavement, on North side of road. Brayshaw & Booth iron casting, erected by the County Council in the 19th century. Inscription reads:- : DONCASTER / 7 MILES / CONISBORO / 1½ MILES : : BRAMPTON BIERLOW & HOOTON / ROBERTS ROAD / SWINTON BRANCH / DENABY : : BARNSLEY / 15¼ MILES / WENTWORTH / 7½ MILES / SWINTON / 2¼ MILES / MEXBORO / 1¼ MILES : Maker:- : BRAYSHAW & BOOTH / MAKERS / LIVERSEDGE : Grade II listed. Milestone at Denaby Main
Alongside the railway crossing on the former A6023. The name of the turnpike which erected this milepost is an indicator of how the industrial development of the area affected places. Both Hampton Brierlow and Hooton Roberts have remained small villages while places like Mexborough, Denaby Main, Swinton and Wath upon Dearne expanded enormously with the development of industry in the Don and Dearne valleys.

Denaby Main level crossing
A class 144 'Pacer' unit passes on its way towards Sheffield. This once busy crossing has been replaced by a bridge, visible just to the left of the train, and now only carries traffic to the Dearne Valley Leisure Centre.

Denaby Main level crossing.
Road traffic is now restricted to users of the Dearne Valley Leisure Centre; the view is from the new road bridge which has replaced the crossing on the A6023. A class 158 diesel unit is making its way towards Doncaster and on to Scarborough.

Colliery wheel outside Dearne Valley Leisure Centre
The leisure centre was built on the site of Denaby Main Colliery which closed in 1968. The wheel stands as a memorial to the 203 men and boys who lost their lives during the 100 years of production.
