Barrow Hill (for Staveley Works) Station
View westwards, towards Chesterfield, of a station that seems to be functioning but was actually closed on 5/7/54!. The line is the Midland main Chesterfield - Rotherham line, a very busy line in those days by-passing Sheffield. On the right (out of sight) was Staveley (Barrow Hill) Locomotive Shed, which is nowadays a major Museum, depot for many preserved steam and Diesel locomotives. With a uncanny resemblence to the many nearby railway buildings Barrow Hill Methodist Church was no doubt built to serve the needs of the local railway workers and their families.

Barrow Hill Memorial Club
On the side of this building - which must have once been a home from home for generations of coal miners and railway workers - a shiny engraved plaque remembers the dead of two world wars who left this industrial settlement to fight for their country.
