Barrow Hill (for Staveley Works) Station
View westwards, towards Chesterfield, of a station that seems to be functioning but was actually closed on 5/7/54!. The line is the Midland main Chesterfield - Rotherham line, a very busy line in those days by-passing Sheffield. On the right (out of sight) was Staveley (Barrow Hill) Locomotive Shed, which is nowadays a major Museum, depot for many preserved steam and Diesel locomotives. [See other pictures in this Grid Square].

On the side of this building - which must have once been a home from home for generations of coal miners and railway workers - a shiny engraved plaque remembers the dead of two world wars who left this industrial settlement to fight for their country.
